What is a Warm Autumn?

Warm Autumn, also called True Autumn, is one of the twelve seasons in the color analysis system. It is defined by three coordinates: warm in temperature, medium in depth, and soft to medium in saturation.

Warmth is the dominant trait. Each of the other Autumns is defined by something else: Soft Autumn by mutedness, Deep Autumn by depth. Warm Autumn is the undiluted version of the family, the one where temperature decides everything. Put a cool colour on a Warm Autumn and the effect is immediate: the skin goes grey or yellow and the eyes lose their colour.

The common mistake is to hear "warm" and think "orange". The Warm Autumn palette is mostly camel, coffee brown, olive, and chestnut, with the oranges and golds used as accents. A wardrobe built entirely from pumpkin and mustard looks like a costume. A wardrobe of warm browns and olive with one spiced colour near the face looks like you.

Signs you might be a Warm Autumn

• Gold looks like part of you. Yellow gold blends into your skin, while silver looks like it is sitting on top.
• Cool colors turn you grey. Icy blue, lilac, and blue-grey make you look tired or unwell.
• Autumn leaf colors glow on you. Rust, pumpkin, and mustard make the skin look warm rather than orange.
• Pure white looks harsh. Ivory and cream are noticeably kinder.
• Your eyes are warm. Topaz, amber-brown, golden hazel, warm green, or olive, often with gold flecks.
• Your hair has red or gold in it. Auburn, copper, golden brown, or brown that turns red in sunlight. Freckles are common.
• Warm skin. Usually clearly warm, with a golden or peachy cast, and sometimes olive. Warm Autumn occurs at every skin depth.

The Warm Autumn color palette

The palette has three parts: six neutrals to build on, six accents for near the face, and six colours to avoid. The hex codes match the palette the ToneFit app returns for Warm Autumn.

Camel is the signature neutral, and a camel coat is probably the single best investment a Warm Autumn can make. Olive green is the neutral people underestimate: it pairs with every accent below and makes denim look more deliberate. Warm ivory takes the place of white in shirts and T-shirts, and dark chestnut or coffee brown takes the place of black.

Petrol blue deserves a note. Warm Autumns are often told blue is off limits, and most blues are. Petrol blue works because it carries green and depth, which keeps it from reading icy. Try it with camel or rust red and it becomes one of the most flattering combinations in the palette. Golden orange is the brightest accent you have, so it works best in smaller doses: a scarf, a bag, a summer top.

Colors to avoid

Everything on this list has a blue base. That is the one thing a Warm Autumn cannot carry.

• Icy pastels. Ice pink, soft lilac, and ice blue belong to the cool Summers and Winters. On you they make golden skin look sallow by contrast.
• Cool greys. A cool gray suit or sweater looks institutional on warm colouring. Warm taupe or coffee brown fills the same role.
• Blue-pinks. Bright magenta and fuchsia clash with the red-gold in your skin. Choose brick red or rust red when you want a strong colour.
• Pure white. Use warm ivory for shirts, and save stark white for pieces worn well away from the face.

Makeup for Warm Autumn

Foundation. Warm base, medium depth for most. Codes ending in W or G, or labelled golden or olive, usually match. Pink-toned foundations leave a visible grey cast.

Blush. Warm peach, soft terracotta, and brick. A warm bronzer brushed across the cheeks often does more than blush alone.

Eyes. Bronze, copper, olive, khaki, and warm brown. Brown or olive liner looks more natural than black on most Warm Autumns.

Hair color and jewelry

Hair. Golden brown, auburn, copper, chestnut, and warm caramel. This is one of the few seasons that suits true copper hair. Ash tones make the skin look flat, and platinum or blue-black removes the warmth that holds the colouring together.

Jewelry. Gold, brass, and copper. Yellow gold is the default, brass suits vintage and casual pieces, and copper is worth trying if your hair has red in it. Silver and white gold look grey on you. Satin and hammered finishes suit the earthy palette. Amber, tiger's eye, carnelian, and citrine are the stones to look for, and tortoiseshell works for glasses frames and hair clips.

Warm Autumn vs. its neighbours

Warm Spring is the neighbour most often confused with you, because both seasons are fully warm. The fastest test: hold rust red and a clear warm coral against your bare face in daylight. Building a Warm Autumn wardrobe

Start with two neutrals as your base (camel and coffee brown, or olive green and warm ivory), add three accents that go near the face (rust red, antique mustard, petrol blue), and finish with gold or brass jewelry. Contrast between pieces can sit at a medium level: a rust sweater over olive trousers, or an ivory shirt under a camel coat, is exactly the depth of contrast your colouring expects.
